Saving £87 in One Month: How Intelligent Mode Maximizes Energy Value Under TOU Tariffs

“You know, life is too short for spending your time organizing all this stuff. So, the simplicity and the simplicity of knowing that is doing the best it can without having to keep intervening is really what we're after” — Jonathan, UK Homeowner

For many households, energy optimization shouldn’t feel like a second job. It should simply work in the background — automatically, intelligently, and effortlessly.

The user is based in the UK with an average daily electricity consumption of 34 kWh and is on a time-of-use (TOU) tariff. The home energy system is configured with a 6 kW inverter and a 10 kWh battery, enabling integrated solar generation, storage, and intelligent energy management. The household is equipped with two EVs and a 7 kW charger, along with major appliances including two dishwashers, a washing machine, a dryer, two electric water heaters, and an electric stove.

During November 2025 (1–30 November), the user used Intelligent Mode (SmartEarning). By intelligently coordinating household load forecasting, solar generation, and TOU pricing, the system charged the battery during low-tariff periods, maximized on-site solar utilization during the day, and prioritized battery discharge during peak-price hours.

As a result, the user saved £87 in electricity costs within a single month. Compared with a traditional self-consumption-only strategy, overall energy optimization performance improved by 89.6%, demonstrating the tangible value of Intelligent Mode.

How the intelligent works? Here is a one-day example.

PowerOcean user case-intelligent mode maximizes energy value under tou tariffs

1:00–5:00 | Off-Peak Tariffs, Smartly Leaving Room for Surplus Solar

During the hours when electricity prices are at their lowest, Intelligent Mode charges the battery using low-cost grid power, preparing the home for the upcoming morning peak.

Unlike a simple “charge-to-full” strategy, Intelligent Mode combines household load forecasting and solar generation forecasting to intentionally avoid charging the battery to 100%, leaving room for surplus solar later in the day. This ensures that more solar energy can be captured and used, further reducing overall electricity costs.

5:00–7:00 | Mid-Peak Pricing, Unlocking the Value of Cheap Energy

As tariffs move into the mid-peak period, Intelligent Mode begins discharging the low-cost energy stored overnight to power the home, minimizing the need to draw electricity from the grid at higher prices.

8:00–15:00 | Daytime Generation, Maximizing Solar Value

As sunlight intensifies, household consumption is increasingly supplied directly by solar PV, while surplus generation is prioritized for battery storage in preparation for the evening peak.

15:00–19:00 | Peak Tariffs, Using Solar to Beat High Prices

When electricity prices reach their highest level of the day, Intelligent Mode prioritizes discharging stored solar energy from the battery to power the home, significantly reducing reliance on expensive grid electricity.

With Intelligent Mode, energy management becomes invisible. No manual scheduling. No constant monitoring. No second-guessing. Homeowners save more, think less, and live with ease while their energy works smarter on their behalf.
